What’s YOUR favorite Christmas movie? We always watch ELF at least once a year! I thought it would be fun to take eos lip balm and turn them into gnomes/elves as a fun holiday craft and gift idea!

Lip Balm Gnomes is a Fun Teen Craft

My girls and I have been using eos lip balms for YEARS. We always have at least one in our purses. As a mom with tweens and teens I can tell you that coming up with friend gift ideas can be tricky. So we thought it would be SO fun to create a holiday gift idea that incorporates eos lip balms and create a KIT that we can give. What’s more fun than a holiday craft night? I think my girls would love it. I created a kit so the girls and I can make them together!

Lia Griffith created some gnomes using pine cones and I thought the concept would be perfect to use with eos lip balms as the gnome’s base. Then we just add a wood ball for the head and felt for the gnome’s scarf, hat, mittens and shoes.

Aren’t these gnomes just the cutest thing ever?? And I love that they are useful gifts too. You can still unscrew the bottom of the eos lip balm and use it PLUS it can sit on your kitchen counter or bathroom shelf and it’s adorable too!

Make Gnome Kits to Give as Gifts!

So I created some DIY Gnome Craft Kits. Make a few up and give them out this holiday season. EVERYONE will love making these adorable Holiday Felt Gnomes with eos lip balms inside!

Here’s how to make these eos Gnome Lip Balm Craft Kits:

eos Gnome Kit Supplies:

• Box, tissue paper and cute bow/bells or other embellishments
• Tags – one for the front of the box, 1-2 other tags if you want to include treats inside. I included cinnamon Santas and chocolate covered pretzel trees. Because – everyone needs some yummy treats while crafting with friends, don’t you think?
• eos lip balms.
• Felt for the scarf, mittens, hat and shoes.
• The pattern for the hat, mittens, scarf and shoes. I included the template here. You can either print out the template and include it in the box, OR cut each one out and label it and lay them on top of the felt pieces inside the box.
• Tiny bells for the top of the hats (optional)
• 1.5″ wooden balls.
• A sharpie pen
• The directions below. Just print it out and cut out the steps and include it in the kit.

eos Gnome Lip Balm Directions:

• Cut out the felt pieces for each eos gnome. Each gnome needs 1 hat, 2 mittens, 1 scarf and shoes. Get the pattern here. When printing, look at the settings, put the scale at 110% and turn off the margins.

• Place each eos lip balm on a flat surface. Hot glue the shoes onto the bottom of the lip balm.
• Then hot glue the wooden ball head on top of the eos lip balm.
• Fold each hat in half and add a strip of hot glue to one side of the hat, press it against the other seam of the hat.
• Put a dot of hot glue inside the rim of the hat, one on the front and one on the back. Put the hat on top of the wood ball and press the area that has hot glue onto the wood ball, attaching the hat to the gnome’s head.
• Wrap the felt scarf around the neck of the gnome. Tie a knot and pull both ends of the scarf down. You might have to trim the scarf a little so it isn’t too long. Once trimmed, add a little fringe to each scarf by cutting small cuts on each end of the scarf.
• Add a mitten on each side of the gnome, right under the bottom of the scarf.
• Use the sharpie to make small eyes right under the bottom of the hat and a nose in the middle of the eyes.

Create the eos Gnome craft kit:

• Take the box, lay all of the pieces of felt in one corner of the box, put the patterns on top of the felt.
• Put the wooden balls and jingle bells together in one corner of the box. You can also put these in a small zip lock baggie.
• Fold up directions and put that in the box.
• Also add the sharpie pen.
• You can add treats too if you want.
• Tie the box with ribbon, bells and a tag or card.

I used eos holiday collections to make these gnomes, but you can use any eos lip balms!

They smell SO good!! I can’t wait to give our craft kits out!

Walmart contacted me to see if I wanted to come up with a fun craft that goes along with these delicious mug treats. I KNEW I wanted to make sharpie mugs that you can make and then fill with a yummy TREAT. The thing I love about this craft is that you can customize the design or saying on your mug for the person you are creating it for! Plus – you can fill the mug with their favorite flavor cake mix. Here’s the tutorial to make Sharpie Mugs and Mug Cake Gift Ideas!

The trick to making Sharpie mugs that are lasting is using a different kind of Sharpie marker. In the past I have made Sharpie mugs using regular Sharpies which is fun but I noticed that the Sharpie markers washes off after a while. I experimented and found that Sharpie makes an  oil-based paint marker which is long-lasting on ceramic or glass. Walmart has an amazing assortment of these Sharpie oil-based paint markers. I also love that you can buy them in packs of different colors which is SO economical. I bought one of the colorful assortment of these markers for just $6.69, plus a basic black oil-based Sharpie marker.

TIP – these markers come in different tip widths which is awesome! The markers I used have the regular tip but I HIGHLY recommend getting a black marker with a FINE TIP if you want to write sayings on your mugs. A fine tip will let you make an outline of the letter and then fill it in which looks much cleaner and will save you a lot of aggravation. Hand lettering is hard to do. My advice is to go with your natural handwriting and just go for it. If you overthink the letters it is stressful and your person will appreciate your true handwriting. If you DO mess up, you can use nail polish remover to wipe the whole thing off and start over.

I made a few different mugs. I think they are super fun. The easiest ones for me were the simple faces. I could make those in one try. The ones with the lettering were harder but I decided not to stress if they weren’t perfect. Imperfections make the mug look handmade which is what you want!

I decorated the handles too! With hearts, sayings and rainbows. I think this gives the mugs a little whimsical element which I love.

Wash your mugs and wipe them clean.

Getting all of the dirt and oils from fingerprints will help the paint stick better.

Sketch out your pattern or design on a piece of paper.

This will save you some aggravation. Then just go for it. You want your mugs to look handmade so imperfection is good. If you mess up you can wipe it all off with nail polish remover and start over.

Let the paint dry for a few minutes.

If you handle the mugs while the paint is wet it will smudge.

Put your mugs on a baking sheet and put them in the oven.

Set your oven to 425-degrees and let it heat up with the mugs inside. DON’T put the mugs in the oven when it is hot because they could crack due to the sudden temperature change.

Let the mugs cook for 30 minutes.

Turn the oven off after 30 minutes and keep the mugs in the oven until it has cooled down to room temperature.

Take the mugs out and let sit for 12 hours before cooking with them.

Make your Betty Crocker Mug Treats!

Each Betty Crocker Mug Treat comes with everything you need except for water or milk. They’re so easy to make. You just pour the cake mix into your mug and then add either water or milk and stir. Then pop it in the microwave for about a minute for the perfect little treat! When it’s done cooking, there is a frosting packet that you can top the cake with and it’s DONE!

Then deliver it to YOUR special person or eat it yourself.

One last note – These Sharpie oil-based pens make the design more durable than regular Sharpie pens, but my advice is to NOT use them in the dishwasher. Just hand-wash them and they should last.

UPDATE — I’ve washed each of these 5-6 times in the dishwasher and they still look great. YAY!!!

My Favorite Projects of 2017 – tatertots + jello

I kind of love/hate this time of year. The love the warmth of the holidays, all of the great food, relaxing between Christmas and New years. But it also feels great to get the house cleaned up and get motivated again. I am starting Whole 30 today which is a little scary but exciting. I have SO many projects, goals and plans for 2018. But one of my favorite things I love doing is going back through all of my posts from the previous year and seeing all of the projects and memories. Every year I share my favorite posts!

2017 was a wonderful year for me and for my family. Going through the heartbreak and loss of divorce and hard years during that and after really made me grow as a mother and person. I learned SO much about myself and through counseling I was able to change and grow. I spent 2015 and 2016 changing my life and focusing my efforts on my kids and family. 2017 I finally felt like I broke through into the light. I made goals for myself and my business and I really fought to accomplish those goals. My OLW for 2017 was SLAY which is a little bit silly but I felt like I needed a strong word to really encompass how aggressively I wanted to conquer my goals. I worked more hours on my business than I ever have but I got so much done too!!

I didn’t have any contributors. Every post was written by me (except for a couple of guest posts), every project created by me. I posted 341 times in 2017 with over 200 tutorials. I also was able to work with amazing brands which was a dream come true — Fabric.com, Home Depot, American Crafts and my Home+Made line, CVS, eos, Shutterfly, Walmart, Amazon, Nestle, Hobby Lobby, JCPenney, Princess Cruises and Microsoft. Another high point of the year was being named a TOP TEN Home DIY influencer in Forbes.com. It was a wonderful year with LOTS of adventures with our kids, our wedding, our Alaska honeymoon and most of all — happiness! Here are a few of my favorite posts from 2017:

Rudolph Pudding Cups

Rudolph Pudding Cups 

Rudolph Pudding Cups Holiday Snack Idea

I told you that the supplies needed for these Rudolph Pudding Cups were minimal.  You’ll need:

Chocolate pudding cups

Gold & Red pipe cleaners

Red jingle bell

Googley eyes

Hot glue

That’s it!  We made Bat Pudding Cups for my daughter’s preschool class and they loved them.  What kid doesn’t love pudding cups though right?

I originally was planning to leave the red pipe cleaner for the smile off, but my oldest daughter urged me that they looked too serious without them.  We certainly don’t want serious looking Rudolph Pudding Cups so we added the smile for a goofy touch.  These were first grader approved.  My girls were even arguing over who was going to get to take these Rudolph Pudding Cups to give to their teachers.  It was a silly argument in mind since the other teachers were getting our Grinch Truffles.  As a former teacher I’d happily take the truffles, but I think my girls love of pudding cups was winning the battle in this argument.

Part of the reason that I love making gift ideas like these is because they are so simple to put together.  You have an endless array of choices too like our Rudolph Applesauces or our Rudolph Jar Gifts.  Simple, easy and loved by kids!
