15 Themed Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas

Hi friends! Can you believe it’s Christmas time? it’s my favorite time of the year. One of my favorite way to celebrate Christmas is creating a beautiful tree for the holidays. I love creating a theme with a matching mantel too. I’ve been sharing my tree ideas for almost 15 years here at tatertotsandjello.com, so I thought it would be fun to round up the ideas and share!! I hope they give you some inspiration!

Colorful Disco Ball Christmas Tree

This year I went with a disco ball theme. I think disco balls are so festive. I created a disco ball wreath and added disco balls to my tree and also a disco ball centerpiece in our dining room!

Christmas Tree Mantel and Tree

Last year was one of my favorite themes. I took a Christmas Tree Farm from Hobby Lobby, painted it and made tissue paper trees. In the tree I added paper tissue balls.

Candy Cane Themed Tree

A classic candy cane themed tree is always a cute idea at Christmas time! I love the pops of red and white. I added a sleigh and pretty red and white merry christmas pillow!

Colorful Falalala Tree

A falalala tree is a fun theme. I found these signs and decorated the tree around them. I loved the plaid ribbon with all of the happy colors that matched the ornaments o the embroidery hoop wreath and bottle brush trees.

Joy to the World Tree and Mantel Theme

One of my very favorite themes. I created a Joy to the World mantel using a large branch and hanging embroidery hoops that say Joy to tThe World. I also created a large JOY sign and made these colorful wood slice snowflake ornaments

Santa North Pole Tree Theme

A Santa tree is sure to delight your family! I added these sweet Santa ornaments, created a SANTA saying in the middle of the tree and even added coal to the sleigh under the tree.

I’ll Be Home For Christmas Tree

This was such a fun one. I found paper mache houses. I painted them and added glitter. Then I put the houses in the tree and on the dining room table. I also created a Home for the Holidays sign that I put in the tree too.

Family Photo Tree

This was such a sweet tree. I painted wood frames white and added black and white family photos. I also stenciled the crate and put the tree inside.

12 Days of Christmas Tree

Another favorite. This 12 Days of Christmas tree was so fun to make! Giant candy canes and different sized packages with the number of each of the twelve days! Inside the packages are activities and treats!

Joyeux Noel Gold Themed Tree

Gold is always pretty for the holidays. I made this Joyeux Noel sign. Built a gold crate fir the treem=, spray painted an old door for the mantel and created gold fabric trees along with gold stockings this year.

Sunburst Christmas Tree

This year I was inspired by some sunburst ornaments from Ballard Designs. I made my own sunburst mirrors with popsicle sticks! I loved the natural elements in this tree.

Cottage Themed Tree

Black and white checked were the cottage theme of this tree the first year we lived in our cottage. I loved the tree tucked into the curve of our spiral staircase.

Pom Pom Tree

Last year I decorated an outdoor tree ad it made our back entrance so festive. I themed it my pom pom tree and I used pom pom yarn I found at JoAnn Stores and pink and white pom pom garlands. I felt so whimsical!

Merry Red and Turquoise Themed Tree

This year I matched my Christmas decor to my couch. I added red and turquoise ornaments with snowflakes to the tree and added red and turquoise pinwheels to the mantel that spelled MERRY,

Hello Christmas Tree

I loved our little entryway at the 1905 cottage. It was perfect for a little tree. This one was simple and went so well with the plaid pillows. I loved the dutch door and the glittering hello sign.

Coir Rug Painting Tips: Draw the Pattern

If you aren’t using a stencil, use a pen or dark pencil to sketch out the pattern before you begin painting.

Coir Rug Painting Tips: Supplies

Paint Pour Squeeze Bottles

Coir rugs are a tricky texture to paint. They absorb paint really well and have a rough surface, so getting lines straight can be tricky. I’ve discovered that using a very small brush to get the lines straight works best. But also a trick is using a mixing bottle that has a hole at the top. I fill it up with 80% paint and then add about 20% water. Adding water makes the paint come out easier, instead of globs.

Coir Rug Painting Tips: Using a Stencil

Another idea you can do to paint coir rugs is cutting a stencil out of vinyl. You can use a craft cutting machine to cut out the letters and designs. Then you lay the vinyl over the rug and then use a sponge to dap paint on top of the stencil.

Coir Rug Painting Tips: Imperfections are Ok!

Also just know that your rug is going to have some imperfections and that is ok! It just means it was made with love. So don’t sweat it!

Baking Soda Clay Gift Wrap Embellishments

Have you ever made baking soda ornaments? They are so easy to make. Only TWO ingredients and you can make any shape ornament you want!

Organic Gift Wrap Elements

The baking soda stars I made look so pretty with foraged branches and boughs I brought in from outside! If you don’t want to use natural elements, you can use faux branches. If you can’t find branches to cut for this project, you can buy bags of round branch pieces at Dollar Tree!

Wood Slice Tree Embellishment

The wood slice tree is so easy to make. Just hot glue wood slices to your package. Add a baking soda star to the top wood slice and a bow!

Evergreen Tree Embellishment

To make the evergreen embellishment, take a few branches about the size of your package and glue them on the paper. Add a star to the top and a bow. Easy peasy!

Stars on Twine Embellishment

Make a little mini garland with baking soda stars and twine. Just hot glue them to the center of the twine and add some greenery to the ends.

Simple Star Embellishment

The clay star really stands out when you glue it to the center of a small bough. I love the simplicity of this one.

Decorating a Vintage Home for the Holidays

This is our second year in our #1891AvenuesCottage home. Last year we hadn’t started our remodel so it was hard to find things to share. This year we are in the middle of the remodel but we have gotten so much accomplished in the past 9 months!

Cottage Holiday Front Porch Decorating

Let’s start with our front porch! I love cottage style – it’s homey, warm and comforting. I like to add a little bit of a bohemian look too! This year I added this with our boho lighted tree, decorating our modern egg chair and our boho porch swing!

Cottage Holiday Egg Chair

I added some red and white pillows, a cozy throw and fresh garland. The fresh garland looks so festive at the top of the chair. I tied it onto the chair with some green pipe cleaners.

Cottage Boho Porch Swing

Our porch swing is one of my favorite things! We love sitting on our porch when it’s warm, but we also have been sitting out there while it’s been chillier. I added a soft faux fur throw and some cozy pillows. It’s the perfect spot to sit with a cup of warm hot cocoa and enjoy our downtown neighborhood!

Boho Wicker Tree

Isn’t this wicker tree so fun? The Wicker tree is from Ikea and loved the simplicity of the design. I think the wicker goes so well with the woods in our egg chair and porch swing. I added lights to the inside of the tree and it sparkles at night!!

Color Changing Porch Lights

We love our color-changing lights. During the holidays I love to set them to “white and red” and they make our house look like a candy cane cottage!!

Cottage Holiday Entryway Decorating

One of the sweetest parts of our 1891 is the little entry room. It’s small but so cute. Our home has very high ceilings and I love the dimensions of this room. I added a little DIY bench I made and hung my @SincerelyUsShop sign over the bench. I added some colorful pillows to the bench and some woven holiday rugs too! Fresh garland adds the finishing touch!

Cottage Holiday Office Decor

I spend most of my days in my office so I wanted to make it festive for Christmas! I decorated my office nook with some fresh greens and a holiday sign.

Decorated Dream Box

I keep my craft supplies in my Create Room DreamBox. It was so fun to add some festivity to the DreamBox. The thing I love about my DreamBox is it looks like fine furniture that fits in with my home. The main part looks like a pretty shelving unit and is so fun to decorate!

I added some bells, ornaments and little trees. It’s so pretty!

1891 Vintage Fireplace Holiday Decor

Last year I redid the original fireplace for under $200. I added peel-and-stick floor tile on the hearth. And on the surround I used black peel and stick tile which camouflaged the fact that the fireplace insert was off-center. I added some simple garlands and white village houses. I love the lights.

Colorful Snowflake Art

DIY Snowflake art adds some BRIGHT art to our family room and ties in with our bright holiday tree. I am going to write up a tutorial on how to make these. They would be fun to leave up all winter.

I also set up our family nativity set, which is so meaningful for the holidays.

Cottage Holiday Dining Room

Plaid is perfect for the holidays. I used my MacKenzie-Childs plaid throws, ornaments, Flower Market serving pieces to add some scottish flare for the holidays.

My favorite item this year is this GORGEOUS MacKenzie-Childs holiday wreath. Look at the details.

This wreath is so magical and charming. I love the way it looks above our dining room table!

We also celebrated my daughter’s birthday last weekend so our holiday dining room has doubled as a festive birthday space which has been fun!

I also added a few touches to this new cabinet we added in our kitchen! I filed the back of the cabinet with cement tile that Mathew our new pantry!

Cottage Holiday Bathroom Touches

I did a little bathroom refresh a couple of weeks on our main floor half bathroom. I painted the walls white and added black board and batten. As a temporary fix I used the same peel-and-stick tile that I used on my mantel hearth and I love the way it turned out! I will share more on that room soon!

Colorful Holiday Ideas

Over the years I have decorated every color palette around for Christmas. I’ve discovered that bright colors are where my heart is. I love the way bright colors fill our home sense of whimsy and joy. This year I figured that we need all the happy colors we can get!!

Merry Christmas Mantel

I created a really easy DIY Merry wreath using some leftover ornaments and an embroidery hoop. I paired it with my favorite colorful bottlebrush trees.

DIY Wood Snowflake Art

A couple of years ago I created some Scandinavian Snowflake Colorful Ornaments and I love them so much that I decided to make a larger version to hang over our couch. The best part about this project is that you can make them as colorful or neutral as you want! Just paint the canvases whatever color works for YOUR home!

Candy Cane Colorful Christmas Tree

One of the first thing that I fell in love with when I walked into our 1891 home for the first time was the spiral staircase! There was the perfect curved place for a tree. I love filling it with a pretty themed tree each year. This year I chose “Candy Cane” for this tree and our kitchen area. I just finished installing the new runner and our kitchen remodel is almost done!

Our kitchen remodel is coming along. I painted our island black and I love the dark neutral background.

Bring Color in with Fresh Greens

I added fresh greens on our open shelves. I also added a wreath on our new planked hood.

Colorful Painted Cookie Jar

I spray painted a white cookie jar my favorite shade of pink and I love the way it pops in the kitchen, It’s the same shade of pink I painted the vintage step stool that’s in our back pantry!

DIY Tiled Vintage Cabinet

One of my favorite projects I tackled this year is the DIY tile backsplash that installed in a beautiful Facebook Marketplace cabinet. I used the same matching tile that we put in the back pantry. I love the way it ties the kitchen and back pantry together. This is where we keep our everyday dishes and glassware. I added a few holiday touches inside!

Can you believe this cabinet was originally a gun cabinet?? I added some plaid MacKenzie-Childs gingham napkins to add some holiday cheer to the cabinet!

Colorful Plaid Dining Area

In our dining area I went with a plaid theme. My mom, sisters and I took a girls’ trip to Scotland last year and the plaid reminds me of our trip!

I used MacKenzie-Childs throws instead of a tablecloth. My 8 quart MacKenzie-Childs stock pot to create a festive floral centerpiece and I love the way the bright floral Flower Market print plays with the plaids. Then I added some simple wreaths to the open shelves there and red and white plaid bows to bring color to the wall.

Holiday Butler’s Pantry

One of my favorite new spaces in our home is our NEW butlers pantry. We are just finishing this space up, but I couldn’t resist adding some bright and colorful items to bring some happiness to this baking section.

I added a colorful wreath, garland and fresh evergreen boughs and I love the way it looks!

Colorful Holiday Laundry Room Decor

Our new laundry room adjoins the pantry and it’s also is almost done! I spent all summer stripping and refinishing some vintage doors that we hung in the wall to separate the space. It was worth the work!

We are still waiting on some back-ordered cabinet pulls and a few other details but we are so excited to have a functioning laundry room!! Bottlebrush trees bring in some happy color. A wreath on top of a vintage ironing board adds holiday cheer!

Colorful Holiday Embroidery Hoop Ornament Wreath

Take those extra ornaments and create a spectacular wreath. The shine of the ornaments is so pretty against the evergreens!

15 DIY Christmas Wreaths

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! My friends are also sharing festive Christmas wreaths. Just scroll down to go over and see the tutorials.

Match Your Tree Decor

Use the same color ornaments in your wreath that you have in your Christmas tree for a wreath that will compliment your overall color theme. Or match ornaments to the color of your front door for a beautiful statement.

Embroidery Hoops Make a Wonderful Wreath Base

I love the wood look of embroidery hoops for wreaths. The wood is so pretty and works well with a cottage or farmhouse look.

Supplies to Make a Embroidery Hoop Ornaments Wreath

Embroidery Hoop (I used a large oval one but you can use any shape or size hoop that you want)

Ornaments — a combination of large and small ornaments. Use whatever color you want. I had a bag of leftover ornaments that matched my tree. I used 7 large ornaments, 2 medium ornaments, 35 small ornaments and 35 tiny ornament.

Greens — I used two ever green boughs and two greenery boughs with white flowers.

Ribbon – I used 5 different colors of ribbon to tie at the top.

Hot Glue and Wire — Use hot glue and wire to attach greens. Hot glue to secure ornaments.

Steps to Make an Embroidery Hoop Ornament Wreath

Stain the embroidery Hoop

This is optional. I used a walnut stain and painted it on the embroidery hoop. I used a wet paper towel to wipe the excess stain off the embroidery hoop.

Attach the Greenery

I criss-crossed the two evergreen boughs. Then I used wire the evergreen boughs to the middle of the embroidery hoop. Then I hot glued the boughs over the wire to make sure it was secure. I did the same thing with the greenery with the white flowers.

Fill in the Middle of the Wreath

I used some extra branches to fill in the middle of the hoop over the wire that secured the branches.

Add Larger Ornaments

I hot glued three of the ornaments over the extra branches in the middle of the embroidery hoop. Then I hot glued the other four large ornaments on the sides of the branches.

Glue the Medium Ornaments to the Wreath

Then I glued the medium balls to the two sides of the wreath.

Add the smaller Ornaments

Fill in the rest of the wreath with the small and tiny ornaments.

Tie Ribbon at the Top of The Embroidery Hoop

I tied the ribbon strips at the top of the wreath.

This year I have really LOVED sharing colorful home ideas! 

COLORFUL Modern Letter Board Holiday Mantel Ideas!!

Last month Hobby Lobby asked me to come up with a fun mantel idea for the holidays. My family room is hot pink and green and I thought it would be FUN to share a COLORFUL simple holiday mantel with you! Of course you can take this concept and go with more traditional colors if you want, or maybe this will inspire you to use some unexpected colors somewhere in your home this holiday season?

The centerpiece of my simple holiday mantel is this gorgeous white letterboard by Heidi Swapp. You can pick it up at Hobby Lobby. I love that it’s white so you can add traditional black letters if you want, OR I picked up a pack of hot pink letters which were perfect for my room. There are also GOLD letters which would be amazing with any color palette. I spelled out – IT’S THE MOST COLORFUL TIME OF THE YEAR. I took the song – It’s The Most Wonderful Time of The Year and swapped out wonderful for colorful. I took the letters from COLORFUL and painted them different colors with craft paint. That gives the word more of an emphasis when you look at it. I also love that I can change up the saying on my mantel throughout the season and that is a great thing for me because I love to change things up a lot!

When I was walking around Hobby Lobby I fell in love with these white ceramic trees. They are so simple and pretty. Plus they come in different sizes. So you can pick up a few and make a magical forest on your mantel or shelf. I also love that I can keep them out after Christmas and use them in a Winter Mantel with all white accessories. I am already planning it out!

COLORFUL Modern Letter Board Holiday Mantel Ideas!!

To add color I brought a few elements together. The first are the gorgeous bright ornaments. I mixed hot pink, turquoise, green with shiny white balls too. I love the pops of color they give my mantel. The other element are these happy bright felt ball garlands. I found them in the scrapbooking section of Hobby Lobby. I took two strands of the felt balls and draped them across my mantel. Then I took two more strands and wrapped them around a few of the trees on top of the mantel too! I think they look like colored lights when they are wrapped around the trees and I love using them on top and below the mantel to bring in the color.

I also used my SIlhouette craft cutting machine and cut out the words FALALALA in heat transfer material and added it to a pillow cover for my chair. SUPER easy. You can find the Silhouette machines in Hobby Lobby and the heat transfer material is on the same aisle.

I wanted a big element for my mantel and I have been making GIANT signs for about 7 or 8 years. It’s so easy to do and inexpensive too! I took a plain wood board and painted it with craft paint. Then I printed out the words FALALALA in vinyl and attached the vinyl words on top of the painted board (once it was dry of course!) and then I painted over the whole board again with a contrasting color of paint. Then all I had to do was peel off the vinyl underneath and the words are the underlying paint color. The two FALALALA projects tie together and the bright colors tie in the colorful mantel.
