Colorful DIY Scandinavian Ornaments

I LOVE decorate our home for the holidays! And I love creating new things. My favorite thing to do is create handmade holiday ideas for our home. This year I wanted to combine my love of COLOR with my love of simplicity and I love the feeling of Scandinavian decor. It’s so clean and I adore how they incorporate wood tones in their decorating style!

Make Bigger Ornaments to Make a Statement

So I thought I could create some Scandinavian-inspired ornaments. And everything is cuter when it’s either TINY or BIG? Don’t you think? So I made some big Scandinavian Snowflake Ornaments. I love seeing big ornaments on a tree. They really make a statement and stand out.

Scandinavian holiday decor. I plan to make more ornaments using small embroidery hoops and they will mirror the embroidery hoops that I have hanging over my fireplace! I am so excited!!

How to Make Scandinavian Snowflake Ornaments

Keep them out all Winter!

Make some for YOUR home! You can create any pattern that you want. I used a simple snowflake pattern and I thought they would look really pretty on my mantel after the holidays are over. I think snowflakes are the perfect winter decorations too!!

Paint the background ANY color

I also love that you can paint the background of the frame whatever color goes in YOUR home! They would look amazing in ALL black and white, don’t you think??

Supplies

You need frames or plaques for this project. You could also use a flat piece of wood and that would be SUPER inexpensive. Here’s what I used.

• Planked Frames (I found mine at hobby lobby. I tried to find a link online but I can’t find it. They are in the unfinished wood aisle and there are several different sizes)
• Craft Paint ( I painted mine 4 different colors. red, turquoise, pink and green)
• White Glue or Clear Glue 
• Stain (optional)
• THREE different sizes of wood circles. 

Paint the back of the frame

Whatever color you want! I painted 8 frames and by the time I was done painting all of them, the first one was dry so I went right to staining them.

Stain the front and sides of the frame

Mix stain with water to get a lighter stain color. I put 2 tablespoons of stain and mixed it with 1/2 cup of water. I used a walnut stain color.

Making the ornaments. This is my craft corner. I have all of my supplies organized in my new Dream Box Organizer. It’s so great to be able to find everything!

Lay out your pattern

Put your wood circles in the pattern you want. I laid them out on one first so I could make sure of the placement.

Glue the circles

I made a circle in the center of the frame then six lines coming out from that and the pattern has an x at the bottom of each of the lines. I used white glue which dries clear and it takes a little bit of time to dry. So I had enough time to get the tiles on before the glue dried. You can do it this way or you can do each line separately if you want.

Hang on tree

I just placed my ornaments in the tree and the branches hold them in place because they are so big. But you can also add a loop of ribbon to the top back of the plaque if you want to hang them up.

I can’t wait to show you the tree once it is all decorated. I think it’s going to be so cute. And I love using new and old elements every year to create something different.

Anthropologie-Inspired Painted Bouquet Holiday Ornaments

Hi friends!! I adore Anthropologie always, but especially at the holidays. They share my love of COLORFUL holiday decor. So when I saw their Pained Bouquet Ornaments I loved the colors that fit right in with my pink, orange and red holiday decor. I used what I already had for a FREE version of their adorable flower ornaments!

Anthropologie’s Painted Bouquet Ornaments

Here’s the inspiration behind my knock-off painted ornaments. They come in three different colors. I decided to use white ornaments since I already had white ornaments from a different project. The flowers are three different colors of pink-red paint and then the stems are a kind of bluish-green. I love the colors and they match the colors in my rainbow rug and tree. So I thought it was the perfect project to create for FREE since I already had all of the supplies.

Supplies to Make Painted Flower Ornaments

Here are the supplies to make this fun project. You can use ANY color of paint to personalize this project to YOUR decor.

• White Ornaments – I used a very heavy white ceramic ornaments.
• Three colors of craft paint — light pink, an orange-pink and a darker red-pink.
• A green paint for the stems.
• Iridescent glitter – using an iridescent glitter makes the ornaments sparkle without covering up any of the paint with a color.
• Velvet ribbon – I used three different colors of velvet ribbon. I love the way the velvet texture looks with the shiny ornaments.

What Kind of Pain Do You Use to Created DIY Painted Ornaments?

I used plain craft paint for this one. I applied it pretty thick to make sure it was durable on the ornament. The glitter also sticks to the paint and protect the paint. Of course you will need to be careful when you pack the ornaments up after the holidays. I wrap them individually in either toilet paper or paper towels to make sure they don’t rub on anything that can damage the paint. If you are worried about the paint rubbing off you can also spray them with a shiny polyurethane. The polyurethane I’ve linked below will protect the ornaments without yellowing.

• Polyurethane spray paint

Steps to Make Painted Bouquet Ornaments

Here’s how to easily make these pretty flower ornaments!

• I painted the middle flower first. It’s quite low on the ornament.
• Begin with the first leaf in the very center of the flower and work your way around, making a slightly wider circle than a round circle. Each leaf is slightly bigger at the top of the leaf. Tip – Start the leaf at the top and go inwards when making them. Don’t worry if it isn’t perfect, this is HANDMADE and it’s supposed to be imperfect. Now you will paint a white center to the flower and you can cover up imperfections in the middle of the flower.
• Next I painted the left flower. The flowers on both sides slightly overlap the middle ornament and there is a space between the top two ornaments where the stem runs through so you will want to leave a space there.

• Next, you have all three flower outsides done, paint the middles white.
• Now make the stems. There is one that runs from the top of the middle flower upwards toward the top of the ornament, one that starts on the outside of the right-side and one on the other left-hand side.
• Sprinkle iridescent glitter over all of the painted elements on the ornament.
• Add a piece of velvet ribbon at the top of the ornament.
• I hung a curtain rod up and hung my ornament on it to dry.
• Now, the ornaments are dry, add the dots. There is a dot in the middle of each flower and small dots along the entire ornament, including the bottom.
• I used the end of a paint brush to add the dots, this keeps the dots uniform.
• Next, Hang the ornaments back on the curtain rod so the dots can dry easier.
• Now you can hang the ornaments on the tree. This also when you would spray them with polyurethane if you want to do that. If you do decide to spray them with a clear coat, make sure to protect the velvet so it doesn’t get polyurethane. You can wrap the velvet ribbon with tin foil to protect it.

How to Make Boho Tassel Ornaments

Boho Tassel Ornament Supplies

• Yarn — 1 20-inch strand. 1 10-inch strand, 30 10-inch strands
• Bead

Make a Loop

Take one of the 20-inch strands and make a loop in the center. Double knot it.

Thread the Bead

Thread the ends of the two ends through the bead.

Place the bundle of 10 10-inch strands over one of the ends of the strand tails.

Make a Knot

Make a knot in the middle of the 10-inch strands.

Fold the Strands in Half

Smooth the strands down over the knot.

Tie the Tassel

Place the tied ends over the 10-inch strand. Tie the strand to make the head of the tassel. Wrap the ends around the head of the tassel and make another knot.

Cut the Ends

Trim the ends of the knot.

Trim the Tassel Ends

Use scissors to trim the tassel ends straight.

I used the Arm and Hammer recipe to make these ornaments. The only difference is that I cooked the dough in the microwave. To do this I poured the baking soda, cornstarch and warm water in a microwave-safe bowl and cooked it on high heat for 40 seconds. Then I stirred the dough and did this four times until the dough became thick and held together in a ball.

5 Ways to Create the Perfect Cottage-Style Christmas Tree

The moment I walked in the door I knew I wanted a gorgeous, tall Christmas tree nestled into the curve of our spiral staircase. So when Balsam Hill contacted me and asked if I wanted to pick out a tree to decorate I was thrilled and I knew exactly where to put my tree!!

Pick Out the Perfect Tree

Owning a Balsam Hill tree has always been a dream of mine because I love how realistic their trees are. I also love the quality of their trees and the selection. They seriously have every kind of Christmas tree you could want, and in so many different heights. There is a Balsam Tree for ANY size or shape of home out there!

I chose Balsam hill’s 12-foot flocked Frosted Alpine Balsam Fir tree. I love the look of Balsam Fir trees and I didn’t want to overcrowd my space with a really full tree.

Another reason I chose Balsam Hill, is their trees are PRE FLUFFED with memory wire branches that help them retain their ideal form. I took the tree out of the box, put the branches in the base and my tree was ready in minutes.

I also loved that the tree comes with a case to keep it in. Balsam Hill even gives you gloves to wear while putting the tree up! So awesome!

Flocked Trees Look Great with Cottage Decor

I love the look of flocked trees. And Balsam Hill has
light-green True Needle foliage, which makes the branches look very realistic. The flocking on this tree is gorgeous and I love the way the lights play against the white of the flocking and the green needles. It is the perfect tree for a cottage home.

Cottage-Style White Christmas Lights

I also love Balsam Hill’s Celestial Fairy Lights, which are smaller lights than traditional trees I’ve had in the past, but they are brighter and so pretty! I think they add extra sparkle to the tree.

Add Cottage-Style Ornaments

Because my tree is so gorgeous, I didn’t want to weigh it down with a lot of decorations and add-ons. It didn’t need them! In keeping with my cottage style, I ordered their Farmhouse Christmas Ornaments. I love the colors, the mix of materials and the plaid designs. It reminds me of a wintry cottage – which is exactly what our cottage is!!

Antique Ornaments Fit the Cottage Look

I also ordered their Antiqued Snowflake Ornament Set. The snowflakes come in sets of four different sizes and patterns that are hand-made. The snowflake ornaments have a antique look, they remind me of ornaments that are passed down from generation to generation. I also love the crystal-like beads that sparkle in the trees lights! I also ordered their Antiqued Snowflake Tree Topper that matches the ornaments. It looks amazing at the top of our tree, soaring toward the top of the cottage.

Add Handmade or Vintage Ornaments

I added a few handmade wooden signs with my Christmas theme this year – FALALALA. I love how simple and pretty the tree looks in our cottage home!

Add Ribbon or a Fabric Garland

I loved the gorgeous blue color in the farmhouse christmas ornaments so I added some satin ribbon and a throw on my cottage bench that brings out the blues in the ornaments and also complements the reds and greens. So pretty!

A Textured Tree Collar

One of my very favorite parts of the tree is the Woven Tree Collar I ordered. I love the texture and color of the tree collar. It’s the perfect addition to the cottage look I was going for with this tree.

I love a Christmas theme! Last year our theme was “Joy to the World”. This year I decided that I love “Fa La La La” from “Deck the Halls” as our theme! And of course I wanted to make some elements that go along with our theme.

I love my giant signs from my friends at Sincerely Us shop. And I thought it would be cool to make some similar, small-size neutral frames with our Fa La La La saying inside.

Hacks to Make Farmhouse Christmas Signs Easier

I found a couple of hacks to make this project easier to create. I found 99-cent unfinished frames at Michaels that work great!

$1 Pre Made Frames

Another thing I found to make this project faster and easier is instead of hand-lettering the words, or using a craft cutting machine, I used thicker letters! Do you know what Thickers are?

Use Thickers for Letters

Thickers are scrapbook letters that are raised and have adhesive on the back. You can get them in any font. These Thickers are from my Pebbles This is Family line, and Pebbles new Merry Little Christmas line now at JoAnn stores!

You only need a few supplies to make these frames:

Unfinished wood frames

Paint for the inside of the frame

Stain

Thicker Letters (Merry Little Christmas Thickers, Jen Hadfield This Is Family Thickers)

Ribbon (if you want to hang them)

How to Make Farmhouse Wood Frame Ornaments

1. Paint the inside of your frames (let dry)
2. Stain the outside of the frames, front and back. A tip about staining the frames, I put some stain in a cup and added about 5x more water than stain. This diluted the stain and made it easier to apply. I brushed it on with a craft paint brush.
3. Apply the Thicker letters.
4. Add a loop of ribbon to the back and hot glue it in place. I just placed my frames in my tree and had the branches hold the frames in place. So adding the ribbon is optional.

Farmhouse Wood Frame Ornaments Make Great Gifts

These ornaments are big enough that you can give them as a gift too! The frames stand up by themselves and can be used as stand-alone Christmas decor. Plus, you can add whatever saying you want, so you can make these as Christmas gifts that people can use all year long!

Wee Little Gnome Pom Pom Ornaments

Hello Tatertots and Jello Readers – I am super excited to be here today as part of Jen’s Happy Holidays series! My name is Bev and I blog over at Flamingo Toes. I love sharing sewing and embroidery projects, along with crafts and home decor too! Today I have some fun Wee Little Gnome Pom Pom Ornaments that have just a bit of embroidery on them to dress them up. They are super simple to make and perfect for even beginning embroiderers!

I had a lot of fun making these! You can really mix and match the colors for some cute looks that you can coordinate with any decor. They make great little ornaments!

I think they’d be really cute gift toppers too!

Here’s how to make them:

Materials:

• 3″ x 4″ piece of felt
• 2 small wool felt balls
• DMC Embroidery Floss – white
• Fuzzy white yarn – the fluffier the yarn, the fluffier the beard!
• Some type of pom pom maker
• Hat Shape Pattern
• Disappearing Marking Pen
• Hot Glue

Start by creating a 2″-3″ pom pom. I left mine a little fluffier than I would normally trim a pom pom – that way it looks more like a beard.

Print out the hat pattern. Cut the shape out of felt and draw your embroidery design on the hat with the disappearing marking pen.

For the tiny snowflake pattern, stitch little criss-cross shapes at each mark with 3 strands of embroidery floss.

Make as many hats as you like. I did a little tree, a snowflake and some little flowers. These designs are all back stitched and the flowers are made with lazy daisy stitches. If you need help with the stitches check out my Embroidery Tips page.

Roll up the hat and overlap the ends slightly at the back. Glue the ends together with hot glue and glue one of the little wool balls on top of the hat.

Add a good amount of glue inside the hat along the bottom edge and place the hat down onto the top of the pom pom. Glue the wool felt ball nose in the center just under the edge of the hat.

If you’d like to use these as ornaments, glue or sew a piece of ribbon or twine to the back edge of the hat. And that’s all there is to it! Now you can make up a bunch for friends. Because who wouldn’t want a fluffy little gnome ornament?!

DIY Wood Plaque Christmas Ornaments

Hi friends, I’m Rebecca from The Crafted Sparrow. I’m so happy to be back again for another year of holiday fun. Each year I love to create at least one or two new sets of DIY ornaments for my Christmas decor. Today I’m sharing these easy to make DIY Wood Christmas Ornaments with you.

DIY Wood Plaque Christmas Ornaments

Supplies:

Wood Slats, 6 pack
Acrylic Paint
Foam Brush
Vinyl Stencils
Cricut Explore Air 2 to cut stencils
Transfer Paper/Tape
Bakers Twine, String, or Ribbon
Hot Glue Gun

I love using these. You can pretty much make a ton of cute ornaments with them.

I designed my Christmas sayings in a photo editing program and then uploaded the designs to my Design Space account for the Cricut Explore. I created a cuttable file with them.

I then sized them to fit the wood slats and cut them on the vinyl. Weed any of the vinyl pieces you don’t want.

I kept my wood slats raw, but if you want them to be a specific color you can paint them at this point and let them dry before adding the vinyl stencil.

Using transfer paper/tape you can apply the vinyl stencils to your wood slats carefully. Use your smoothing tool to get out all the air bubbles.

Using your acrylic paint and a foam brush gently sponge on the first layer of paint. Add a second layer of paint and let dry briefly.

Remove the vinyl stencil before it’s completely dry.

To create a hanger for them simply hot glue some bakers twine, ribbon, or string to the back of the wood plaques. Otherwise you can just wedge them in the tree like I did below.
