Living Room to Office Makeover using Items You Already Have

I’m a big believer of utilizing the space in our home. In my old home I turned our dining room into my craft room because the light was so good on the main floor. I didn’t see any reason to use a basement room for a work space that would be used every day over a dining room that we used maybe twice a year.

Our new home has a very traditional floorplan which I love. It also has a formal dining room and living room. I don’t know about you but those spaces don’t seem to be used very much. And although I loved the look of our formal living room, I wondered if keeping it and never using it made sense for us. I was using a table in our family room as a workspace to blog. The way the table was in the room it faced away from everything and didn’t make much sense.  I also carved out a space in our cottage for a office nook in my bedroom and I loved that cozy warm place when we lived there.

I woke up the other day after thinking about this dilemma for awhile and decided to rearrange the furniture and see what I thought. I think rearranging furniture is a hobby – I love doing it! Once I started moving things around I really loved the idea of using the living room space as a work space instead. And since it was a kind of spur-of-the-moment thing, I went around my house to see what I could find for the space.

I moved a desk from the formal dining room, which was in my old office at the cottage, into the new space. I kept the hot pink chair. It’s perfect as a place for my kids to sit and tell me about their day after school. I moved a little furry ottoman in from our family room. I moved the metal cart around and kept the rug we had before.

I am sitting in my new office as I write this up and I love it! I can see out to the front yard and see what is going on in the neighborhood and the light is streaming in the windows into the room. I love utilizing the space on our main floor. I am right next to the kitchen and family room, so when I have to work in the evenings I am still close to where my kids are and I know what is going on.

Thanksgiving Placemat Pillow Cover

I love a quick project. And I love pillow covers. They are such an easy way to change up your decor easily and inexpensively. Plus, it is so much easier to store a pillow cover than a pillow with an insert. All you have to do is take the pillow cover off and change it out for a new one.

A few years ago I discovered that a really easy way to make a pillow cover is with a cloth napkin or placemat.

So when I saw this GRATEFUL gold placemat at Target’s Dollar Spot a couple of weeks ago I knew it would be so cute as a pillow!

Thanksgiving Placemat Pillow Cover

Here’s how you can turn a placemat into a pillow cover in 10 minutes:

Supplies:

Placemat

Fabric – You will need about twice as much fabric as the size of the pillow cover.

Sewing machine, or needle and thread.

Thanksgiving Placemat Pillow Cover

Directions:

Measure the placemat you are going to use. You will need two pieces of fabric that are the same height as the placemat and about 4 inches less in length than your placemat. So if your placemat is 19 inches in length and 14 inches in height, you need two pieces of material that are 15 inches in length and 14 inches in height.

Once your backs are cut out, sew a seam down one side the height of each of the pieces of material.

Then lay your placemat on your cutting surface with the right side toward you. Lay each of the two pieces of backing material on top of the placemat with their right sides facing inside toward the right side of your placemat. You want the sewn edges of the material to overlap in the middle of the pillow cover, with the outside edges facing inward. You are going to turn the whole thing inside out once you sew it.

Then sew along the edges of the placemat, sewing the two pieces of backing fabric onto the pillow cover.

Turn the pillow cover inside out, which exposes the outside of the pillow cover.

Insert your pillow form.

Enjoy your new pillow cover!

It’s been so fun working on a project I love so much. The 1905 Cottage is a little home I fell in love with years ago and bought about four years ago. You can read all about it here. A couple of years ago I started an addition and now I’m sharing the projects from the addition. Today I would like to share the 1905 Cottage Addition: Dining Room.

This is the outside of the home. The bigger window is the window in the kitchen and the smaller window at the back is the porch which was turned into a room and is the south side of the dining room.

Here’s a picture of the old kitchen and the wall which we took out. The green carpeted room is the room which is now the south part of the dining room.

This is the side of the wall we took out that opened the kitchen to the dining room.

The dining room is one of my favorite rooms at the 1905 Cottage. The south side of the room was a porch when the home was built in 1905. A long time ago that porch was enclosed into a room. When we did the remodel on the original home we took out a wall between the kitchen and what is now the dining room and found one of the long original windows. And in the center of the room is an opening under the home that was a root cellar.

So when the addition began we knew the dining room would be the gateway to the new part of the home. So in the center of the room is a beam where the original outside walls of the dining room were. And it was a little tricky trying to decide how to decorate the room with a beam in the center.

So what I did was I decided to get two long light fixtures to go above the dining room table and have them mirror each other on each side of the beam. I was going to make a light fixture but I ended up finding  a light fixture from World Market that was almost what I had in mind. I painted it to make it blend in a little better with the room and I used chain to chain the two fixtures together and help them hang straight over the table.

I put a rug over the opening to the root cellar. Because….. zombies!! LOL just kidding. But it is a little creepy down there. I’m not going to lie. The rug is the Sierra Paddle Rug from RugsUSA.com.

On the north side of the room I did a simple board and batten treatment to add a little interest to the wall and then hung some Ikea shelves above a garage sale dresser that I turned into a buffet. I like to keep my collection of cake plates on the shelves. But they are fun to decorate for the different seasons!

I made a little bench to put on one side of the table. It’s a little rickety but I love it.

And under the window I put another bench with some cute pillows.

One the north side of the room is a nook that used to be a closet. I took out the closet and put in a tall banquette bench from Overstock. And the table is an antique table my mom gave me when she moved to California. It’s a cozy spot to eat breakfast or do homework.

And on the west side of the room is the door to the cottage’s courtyard. I hung a little gallery wall there above my grandmother’s table. And underneath is a place where the kids can put their shoes when they come in. They like to use the courtyard as their entrance as they come home from school.

Probably my favorite part about the 1905 Cottage’s dining room is the fact that there are windows on both the west and east sides of the room. So it’s always light and a very happy space in the home!

I just love that little house.

But in the meantime — here’s the kitchen reveal!!  

And did I ever tell you why the kitchen reveal took so long?? When we took the bathroom floor up and looked underneath the cottage we discovered that the cottage’s sewer line was collapsed – so we had to get an entire new sewer line all the way to the street. And that costs thousands of dollars. It actually took my entire kitchen remodel budget and so I had to save that up again entirely. And that is why the kitchen was finished so much later than the main part of the house.

But it finally has been finished – and I am excited to share the details with you! As a very small space – the #1905Cottage has been really fun to work on. The kitchen is the biggest room in the house. But it still had it’s issues. When we bought the house the kitchen had a dropped down, grid ceiling, dropped doorways and an awkward design. So we came in and ripped it all apart to see what the bones of the room was. We discovered a hidden doorway, a much higher ceiling and doors and the last remaining original window in the house. Plus TONS of really cool wallpaper designs that had been used in the home over the past 100 years. Here’s what it looked like before:

I knew I wanted to keep the room light and bright with white paint and white cabinets. I also decided to use hexagonal tile on the backsplash and take the backsplash all the way to the ceiling. Instead of upper cabinets on the main wall, I designed floating open shelves.

And on the other main walls I designed built-in cabinets for storage. And to keep with the history of the home, I decided to put in seeded glass in the storage cabinets in the kitchen.

I also spent the whole summer two summers ago sanding down the original hardwood floors in the #1905Cottage kitchen. I rented three different sanders to get the many layers of old linoleum and glue up off the floors. I know in the end that all of that effort was worth it. Now I look at those floors and I love seeing the character.

And another cool thing to know is that all of the original floors in the home are straight, pieces of pine without breaks. And that is hard to find now. So the ones in the kitchen are lengths of pine that are 20 feet in length.

For the island of the kitchen I wanted something that could be moved, just in case the space ever needed to be used for something different. So when I came across a discount Williams Sonoma island at our discount store DownEast Basics, I loved the marble top. And then I found out that it was discounted from $5,000 to $1,000 and then an additional 20% off – I knew it was perfect! My father-in-law built a shelf to go at the top of the island. I am hoping to find some baskets and keep kitchen basics inside.

For the knobs of the kitchen I fell in love with some pretty knobs from Threshold at Target. They have scalloped details that are so pretty!

We also planked the ceiling and I think it gives the room more character, and it also looks like it could have been done 100 years ago.

I spray painted a brass chandelier Sun Yellow and I love the POP of color the chandelier gives the room.

The cabinets are custom made. I was going to put in Ikea cabinets, but these custom cabinets only cost about 10% more and it saved us time in assembly. Plus I could design custom cabinets, like the wall of cabinets that camouflage an old flue in the home.

We brought up the doorways and arched them. And in the bathroom and bedroom we didn’t want to cover the original old doorways up, so we made DIY transoms for those rooms.

I just love this room. It really is the center of the cottage. And now that it is so bright and pretty, it’s really a space that I love and it makes the whole cottage happy and joyful!

Now this space is so light and bright. It’s been a joy to work on. I can’t wait for the next phase of this little house!
