Our family has always done this, at least from the time my mom was a child. We called it the "New Year's Muthe" (though I don't know how to spell that last word, I think it means "mother" in some language.) But it was always a small gift from Mrs. Claus, like a lip gloss or nail polish. Nothing big, just a little something.

What a cute twist! My neighbors growing up always got a visit from Jack Frost on New Years Day. I don't know the story behind it but they would get a couple presents that Jack had brought for them. I never did ask my parents why Jack didn't come to our house. . .

In South Louisiana and in Cajun culture, Le Petit Bonhomme Janvier (The Little January Man) makes a visit on New Year's Eve/Morning leaving candy and gifts. Until a few hundred years ago, this was our "Santa Claus." Santa Claus wasn't introduced here until the English came. My family combines this tradition with the tradition of the Christmas stocking so it requires no additional expense. I wrote an aritcle about it last night if anyone is interested.

I love this idea sooo much. I'll also adopt this tradition especially as Christmas seems to be a three day event in our house and we are never home to take the time as a family to enjoy each other's company or to see what presents our four children have received. Thanks girls for the great idea and the story of Mrs Claus....
