We called it the “New Year’s Muthe” (though I don’t know how to spell that last word, I think it means “mother” in some language.) But it was always a small gift from Mrs. Claus, like a lip gloss or nail polish. Nothing big, just a little something.

Until a few hundred years ago, this was our “Santa Claus.” Santa Claus wasn’t introduced here until the English came. My family combines this tradition with the tradition of the Christmas stocking so it requires no additional expense. I wrote an aritcle about it last night if anyone is interested.
