I struggle with this. I grew up in an abusive home and nothing was ever “mine”. My parents got rid of things I loved without asking all the time. (They still do if I am unfortunate enough to forget an item at their house while visiting.) Beforw I had kids, I always swore I would never get rid of something without them saying it was okay.

Now that I have kids, I realize that my children are living in a very different household than I was. Yet, I still can’t seem to force them to get rid of things that are theirs. Even this method you outlined makes me feel a little panicky. If someone came and boxed up all my things and said I could only save 5 things, I’d be fairly bitter about it.

This is a tough subject for sure.

We are constantly having this problem. Something she hasn’t played with suddenly becomes “my favorite toy!” as soon as it’s on its way out. Definitely going to give this trick a try!

I love this idea! I gave away my daughter’s Dora castle without her knowledge, and she lamented it for about three years. I should have asked 🙁 We have a BOATLOAD of toys in the basement. I am totally going to use this method! Thanks for sharing!

hi! yes it is important to keep clutter under control, but even more important to instill in your children a need for sharing the “wealth”. i have always weeded out their toys and clothes too, because they can get attached to clothes as well. we have a charity box at church that benefits from the twice a year purges, out grown, gently used seasonal clothing and toys that are absolute favorites…. badly wornout clothes go into the dustrag box….

This can be so hard, but starting young helps. It is important for children to learn that items will constantly circulate in and out, and that letting go can be a way to make play more fun, because now there will be more room to enjoy their favorites!
